Copowi, the first ISP to guarantee net neutrality, has launched a new campaign called 'Become invisible for net's sake' as a way of discouraging the telcos from trying to create a tiered Internet and in the process ending net neutrality.
"The idea of a tiered Internet as a solution to the potential bandwidth crunch concerns is flawed," says George Matafonov, Senior Partner of Copowi.
"The solution is to invest in new compression technologies, new ways of moving data rather than wasting money on regressive technology which has the potential to undermine the free-flowing nature of the Internet."
The "Become invisible for net's sake!" campaign urges Internet users to take their online privacy more seriously by using encrypted services for their email and web surfing. The result would not only protect users against online fraud, in particular identity theft, but also make it difficult for telcos to implement their tiered Internet proposal.
"Imagine the resources required to crack open potentially millions of simultaneous encrypted connections so they can peer inside," says Matafonov. "Not only would this require enormous resources but also would have negative implications for the security of online business transactions. Do they really want to risk all that."
As part of the campaign, COPOWI has launched two new services: COPOWI Secure Email and COPOWI Secure Surfing. Both services use strong end-to-end SSL encryption to protect the privacy of Internet users.
Both services are available as either standalone products or as part of an Internet Access package.
All profits from these services will go to the COPOWI Project Fund which will be established with the specific aim of helping communities build and operate their own last-mile Internet connections.
How much would you pay for an Internet connection from an ISP that guarantees a neutral network, bills itself as a "social enterprise" instead of a traditional business, and sends free Ubuntu CDs to every new customer?
News article about our service
August, 2007 -- Copowi.com, the first independent ISP to offer net neutrality guarantees, went live this week offering a range of high speed Internet access plans covering eleven states plus a nationwide dialup service. Copowi specifically guarantees not to degrade or modify user data and not to discriminate between users for commercial or other reasons.
Switching to independent ISPs who guarantee to keep the Internet open and fair provides a new and practical way for people to help protect and preserve the freedoms of the Internet. It could also add 10 million plus new voices to the campaign for Internet freedom.
